Jim, astute analysis. At MINDWEST Strategies (http://mindwest.net) we have been advocating integration of social media as one element of integrated communications strategy -- with enterprise objectives at the foundation. As you note, the challenge will be to rationalize its use not just for casual socializing but for very clear enterprise objectives. Two of the strongest resources I've encountered are the work by Rob Cross heading The Network Roundtable at the University of Virginia, whose latest book "Driving Results Through Social Networks" (http://www.robcross.org) is well worthwhile. The other is Bill French at MyST Technology Partners (http://myst-technology.com) whose work is the "secret" ingredient for companies like INTEL, Citrix and Vail Resorts. Thanks for your great post.
